Across the world there are those individuals who suffer from mental illness. Some suffer more than others, some conditions are more humane than others, but one thing is certain, people having chronic conditions such as schizophrenia must be under the care and supervision of a psychiatrist and must have access to medication that helps them live better quality lives. When Bring Hope Humanitarian Foundation was contacted by the only psychiatric hospital in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan, we knew the situation must be serious indeed.
Dr. Saber is the Director of Erbil Psychiatric Hospital which was established in 2013. The hospital initially received 40-50 patients as a transfer from prison. These are patients who are “totally disabled because they cannot take care of themselves, they cannot even clean themselves…” explained Dr. Saber. This hospital also took 150 patients from other hospitals because of overcrowding or insufficient space. Kurdistan has undergone a crisis though and now Dr. Saber has requested charity help so they can get through these times.
